Cured’s Alternate Ending

So, I was looking at my final revision of CURED today and discovered that I had written two possible endings. I let my editor pick which one we used. Here is the one we did not use:

EPILOGUE #2

Kevin and I walk into the town. Every log cabin has the remains of a massive vegetable garden in the yard, with cold weather plants, like acorn squash and gourds, still in the dirt.

Ears of corn and baskets filled to overflowing with potatoes are sitting out on front porches, as if no one is worried about them being stolen. And I guess they’re not. If a person has enough to eat, he doesn’t need to steal food.

One log cabin has blue metal boxes in front of it, and I can hear the quiet vibration of bees when we pass them. “What are those?” I ask.

“Beehives,” Kevin explains. “My grandpa’s.”

I can’t help but smile. Bees! I stop walking for a minute and listen to them. “Where is your grandpa?” I ask.

“Zeke’s wife says he’s at the fortress.”

“The fortress?”

“You’ll see.” He takes my hand in his and we keep walking to the other side of the town, to a huge, rectangular building made of weathered logs. The air changes, growing heavy with animal smells, and I am reminded of the zoo. I wrinkle my nose. “What is this place?”

“It’s the fortress—where we keep the tainted ones. The beasts. It is where my sister is.”

My legs slow without me meaning to let them. “Wait. How do you keep them from attacking people?”

“If they’re well fed, they’re not as violent. We keep them in cages and feed them. Once a week or so, they’re sedated and washed, and their cages are cleaned.” Kevin pulls me toward the building. He opens a thick, wooden door, and I can’t help but put my sleeve over my nose and mouth to try and dull the smell.

I am standing in a huge room, with knot-covered wooden columns supporting the ceiling, and metal bars blocking the windows. There are more metal bars, which rise from floor to ceiling. Behind these bars are individual rooms, divided with thick wooden walls that are covered with dents and scratches, and inside each room is a beast. I look from cage to cage, counting. There are nineteen beasts, and one empty cage.

A disheveled, white-haired man is standing in the room, pressing pieces of hard, flat bread into the cages. There are fresh scabs down the side of his face, and he has a black eye. On his left hand is a bandage, where his pointer finger should be—but isn’t. His watery, blue eyes focus on Kevin and the man’s lips thin before he sucks them in against his teeth. He walks over to us but doesn’t say anything.

“Grandpa,” Kevin says, taking the man’s injured hand in his. “What happened to you?”

The old man’s eyes move past Kevin and focus on the empty cage. Kevin turns around and follows his grandpa’s gaze.

“Where’s my sister?” he asks in a strangled whisper.

“She attacked me and got away.”

    1. You truly my most favorite author! Stung and Cured are the best books in the world. I finished the series a few months ago and still thinking what will happen next! I recommended the books to some of my friends and they loved. I can’t wait for you next book to come out. You are very talented writer!

  1. That´s great! But please do another book. The others are my life and i cant live without a third book to see how things get tied up and what the world becomes. PLEASE!!!!!

    1. Gavin, Okay. I will do it so that you can live. I would hate to be the cause of your untimely death! It will be a while, though, because I have to finish up the trilogy that I am working on first. 😉

      1. I would love to read the next book. I read the Stung and Cured in less than 4 hours. I loved it so much I didnt stop for anything. I love your books and it will be great to read the next. Can you give me a hint to what the next one might be named? I have a couple of thought that maybe you would like to hear. I thought of these names, United, Together, Unified, Linked, and Connected. I would love to hear back from you on your thoughts. Thank you for such enjoyable books and I cant wait for the next.

        1. Those are really good names! I don’t know what I would call it. I usually write about half the story before a name hits me, and then more often than not, my publisher asks me to change it! So, for now, I don’t know!

    1. I planned on wrapping it up with two, so that is how many are currently in the series, but plans change, and now I plan to write a third because so many people are asking for it.

  6. I’m so happy that your making a third book! I loved the first two! whose point of view will it be from in the third book? What will the title be? And if u emailed a movie director about making your books a film that would be AWESOME! Maybe the director of Maze Runner or Divergent could make you books a film. I know both have Twitters. The books were amazing and I cant wait for the next one!

    1. Originally it did, but then I was so burnt out on writing, and I had four kids and number five was on the way, and I didn’t have a third book in me. But now I do.

    1. I didn’t plan to have Bowen get shot when I was working on the book. It sort of just seemed like it would be the natural way things would have happened, so that’s how I ended up writing it!

  10. Hey Bethany Wiggins! I’m doing my school report on the book STUNG because it was such an amazing book! I can’t wait for the 3rd book as the first 2 were AMAZING!! when I finished CURED, I was really sad that there was no more of these books to read 😂 thanks for all the hard work on these books!

  11. Hi Bethany! Just finished your two books, Stung and Cured. They were amazing!! I heard you were making a third after your series now and i’m so happy!! I cannot wait until its released! I haven’t read Shifting yet, but i do plan on it and look forward to it because you are an amazing author! Hope to hear back from you, thanks!

    1. Aine, Thank you! I am so glad you liked my books. If you get a chance to read Shifting, pop on here and let me know what you think. It is totally different than STUNG and CURED.

  12. Hello Bethany!!! I have just finished reading Shifting and I’ve already read Stung and Cured. You are a fantastic author, and I’m very glad you’re writing more. Are you going to write a sequel to Shifting? I thought it was an underrated book and I loved it! Thank you! 🙂

    1. Jasmine, Thank you! Originally I was going to write a part two to Shifting, but then I got the inspiration for STUNG, so I wrote that instead.

  13. Oh my god I hope your 3rd book will be out soon! I really loved the series and you should really consider trying to make it into a movie

      1. Hi Bethany Wiggins! We are such fans of your books. It would be AMAZING for you to write a third book. The Stung series is our favorite books! Please tell us what the trilogy your making is because we would definitely read it when it comes out. You are an AMAZING author.

Sara: I read your book Shifting and I loved it! My favorite book is Stung you are such an amazing author I really hope you keep writing more books I would definetly read them!

Makayla: Hi Bethany Wiggins! I LOVED Stung and Cured! Stung was my favorite! I can’t wait to read Shifting, I will read it soon. It would be great to have a third book! Love ya!

P.S We feel so complete writing to you

        1. Makayla and Sara,

Thank you for the comment!! Being an author and having people love my books and feel that emotional connection I was trying to get across to readers makes me feel complete.

The new trilogy is about a princess who chooses death by dragon over an arranged marriage and then ends up fighting the beast. If you like my books, you’re bound to love this one. It has action, humor, a really hot barbarian warrior . . . it is going to be awesome.

  14. I cannot describe how much I loved this series! I could just picture what was happening in my mind so vividly, a job well done. The way you set the book into motion was so smooth and I love the fact that the book depicts a dystopian future society, that which made me believe, that isn’t so far off. Please, please, please let me know if the Stung series gets the movie rights and when there is a set released date if/when you decide to make the series into a trilogy!

    1. Athresha, Thank you so much! I tried really hard to write it in a way that showed what was happening so it would play out like a movie in your head. I am glad to hear it worked that way for you. I will for sure post any news I have on here!

      Bethany

  15. Bethany, my name is Olivia and this is now the second time I have read the Stung series because I love it so much! I know you have said that you will write a third (yay!!) but how long do you think it will be until it comes out? I might die of suspense until then. And thanks for writhing this series. It truly changed my life. P.S. please respond. Thanks!

    1. Olivia, THANK YOU! I don’t know when it will come out. I am just finishing up a book now, and I might take a break from the series for a month and see if I can write a whole book during my writing break (ha ha, that sounds so funny).

  16. That is also a really great ending! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE these books! I just finished Cured last night at like 1:00 am because I couldn’t put it down. Are you really going to make a 3rd stung, because that’s all I can think about. I NEED ANOTHER STUNG BOOK! These really are like the greatest books ever! Also, if you’re going to write another Stung, who’s perspective will it be from? I think it would be cool from Jacqui’s perspective, but I also think it would be really cool if you switched perspectives like they do in the book Allegiant if you need an example. Please write another book! You’re truly one of the greatest writers ever!

  17. Maybe in the 3rd book the characters discover that Vince has a brother or sister or mother or father or something that has some secret information or something and they all need to go out on an adventure. And maybe Soneschen is still alive and making some other form of army but not raiders and they have another run in with him and his buddies. Maybe they could be like, “You brought back the raiders.” And Soneschen could say, “No, not raiders. That name lost it’s glory when I was shoved off a building into beast dogs by a ‘raider’.” Or, maybe there’s some new entirely different threat that hasn’t been introduced yet. I don’t know, just some suggestions. I know however you write it it will be great!

    1. And I forgot to me tin that Vinces family member was one of the beasts that they cured. And maybe Jacqui’s hair is a little longer now.

  18. PLEASE write a million more books about Stung and Cured!!! These books are my life and will die without them!!!I would love for there to be a third book.If you could can you reply or email me when their will be a new book coming out. Oh it would be great if you added more romance but I love your books either way.I would appreciate if you reply to this. I LOVE your books.

  19. Either way you end it, it sounds like there should be more. I mean either we find out more about how his sister reacts to the cure or if they find Kevin’s sister. I mean way to leave us adrift and lost. I would love to read more. I am like the biggest book nerd in the world and I just LOVED your books. You could write in Jacqui’s or Fiona’s perspective. Or Kevin’s sister’s view. But it is your decision and I will still re-read your books time and time again. Its just I would love to read another.

  20. Please please please PLEEEEAAASE come out with another sequel to The Stung Series this books are the besti have ever read i read them in 1 week!!! We went to washington dc to visit some family and my mom got me to read books on the plane ride and when we drove to new york i normally HATE reading but these books are the BEST books i have ever read now i normally dont cry during books but when jack (jaqui) reunited with her brother i cried!!!
